According to the Brookings Institution, an American research group, women represent only 15% of the U.S. water utility workforce, and most of those are administrative positions. By comparison, 23.6% of Greeley’s Water and Sewer Department staff are women.

“This is an exciting time for women in the utility industry,” says Nina Cudahy, deputy director of operations and maintenance. “More women are entering the science fields and are being recognized for their skills and ability. I am no longer the only woman in meetings, which is a refreshing change.”

As many of you already know, @unc_colorado athlete

As many of you already know, @unc_colorado athlete and @greeleyschools alum Andrew Alirez won the NCAA Division 1 National Championship in wrestling last weekend.

At last night's City Council Meeting, Mayor John Gates presented Andrew with a rare honor—a Key to the City—in thanks for his hard work and for his commitment to Greeley.

Alirez said, "I love this community. I grew up here, and my family grew up here. I wanted to put on for the city. I wanted to stay home and bring some light to the town, and put us on the map ... Without the support of the community, none of this would be possible. I want to express my gratitude."

The feeling is mutual, Andrew! We're proud to call you a Greeley Original!

As we wrap up Women's History Month, we're enjoying a bit of Greeley's own history of trailblazing women in our community. With that in mind, let's talk about Bessie Smith.

Bessie Smith was born on June 14, 1882. She grew up in town and graduated from Greeley High School in 1899. From there, Bessie Smith became an architect—by mail order. (And you thought Zoom classes were rough!)

Upon graduation, she worked as “the only lady architect in Denver," and two years later she moved back to Greeley to set up her own practice. She spent the next seven years designing many commercial and residential buildings praised as both aesthetically pleasing and practical. For example, one of her houses was designed with the then-novel feature of a bathroom on the main level, which seems like an obvious design feature now. Thanks, Bessie!

Several of her buildings are still standing, like the Coronado Building downtown. A few years back, a home she designed (pictured here) was carefully relocated from the east side to 35th Ave. and restored to its original splendor by Family of Christ Presbyterian Church and Form+Works Design Group.

You're invited to a FREE community easter egg hunt on April 1, hosted by @GreeleyRec at both the Family FunPlex (1501 65th Avenue) and the Rodarte Community Center (920 A Street).

Anyone ages 6 months to 17 years can participate; the egg hunt will be divided up by age groups. In addition, there will be crafts and visits with the Easter Bunny all morning.

Pickleball coming your way later this spring!

City crews were hard at work last week (and every week!) to pave new pickleball courts at Farr Park (2650 13th Avenue). Our team removed old tennis courts and fencing, and they began putting in new concrete.

The courts, which were paid for using city food tax revenues, are on track to open later this spring, just in time for summer play!

Kick off St. Patrick's Day with Danú, one of today’s leading traditional Irish ensembles, at the Union Colony Civic Center on March 16!

From lively, toe-tapping jigs to melancholy ballads sung in both Irish and English, a performance list might feature songs about love and lullabies, travel and the sea, history and war stories, or simply “drinking.” (It's its own theme!) Danú will announce their specific repertoire from the stage, and audiences can expect hornpipes, reels and other favorites like “The Foggy Dew,” “Ten Thousand Miles” and “Mo Ghile Mear."

One of the first signs of spring is the return of migratory bird species, and it's happening now in Greeley! Spring is a particularly active time for birds as they establish nest sites and attract mates.

This flock, captured by Chris Scully, was making a *lot* of noise, perhaps trying to scare off the two hawks perched on the right side of the tree. We asked a local birder what kind of birds the flock may be and he said they could be Red-winged Blackbirds, Brewers Blackbirds or Eurasian Starlings. (It was a bit too far away to say for sure, but it's fun to speculate! Any other guesses?)

With longer and warmer days ahead, Greeley's Natural Areas & Trails division says the time is just right to head out into our city's green space to listen for new bird calls and capture migrating scenes like these.

When you're ready to head out, don't forget to check the state's Colorado Trail Explorer tool (COTREX) for closures and conditions at trails.colorado.gov.

It's one of our favorite Tointon Art Gallery exhibits of the year!

Join us as we celebrate Youth Art Month with an annual student art exhibition featuring works by @GreeleySchools students. These emerging artists and future creatives explore art-making and self-expression through drawing, painting, digital design, photography, mixed media compositions, and sculptural forms.

The opening night reception is from 5-8 p.m. on March 3 as part of the Downtown Arts Walk (with performances and pop-up galleries all over!).

The Tointon exhibit runs for three weeks.

This winter has been particularly cold and snowy, and it's not just hard on us! This type of weather can be difficult for wildlife, too. During this time of year, food is scarce, and wild animals have low energy reserves. They may not survive if stressed.

This is where you come in. We all love seeing wildlife in Greeley's natural areas (and occasionally our neighborhoods!), and we each have a role to play in helping them thrive. Here's how:

• Do not approach wildlife or follow their tracks.
• Keep your dogs on a leash.
• If you see wildlife, move slowly and quietly.

Even when green vegetation starts growing in the spring, it is important to continue practicing these behaviors to give wildlife time to eat and bulk up following the long winter months.

By following these simple tips, you can work to minimize your impact on our wild neighbors and make this is a safe place for everyone in Greeley.

From those known for their extraordinary efforts to build community, to those notorious for their lawlessness, history is full of interesting stories about the Black American experience during westward expansion.

On February 23, at noon, join @unc_colorado professor Dr. George Junne as he shares stories about prominent African Americans of the wild west at the Greeley History Museum (714 8th St.).

Professor Junne is coordinator of Africana Studies at the University of Northern Colorado. He does extensive work for the preservation of Dearfield, the well-known Northern Colorado site of an early 20th century black homesteading settlement just east of Greeley.

This presentation is free and open to the public. No reservations are required.

These American Red Cross Lifeguarding classes are designed to teach you not only the basics in water safety but also the proper protocol when dealing with any emergencies around water.

Prerequisites: 300-yard swim, must tread water for 2 minutes, and complete a timed event. Ages 15+.

March 11-13 • 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.
March 17-19 • 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.
