The traditional in-person storytime events could not occur at the Centennial Park Library due to COVID-19 restrictions, so the library got innovative and did a drive-through storytime in February. The High Plains Library District implemented “I LOVE Drive-in Storytime” at the Centennial Park Library, 2227 23rd Avenue, as a way to continue the community’s love for the pastime event.

This new approach is modeled after a drive-in movie theater experience.  A drive-in storytime allows kids and adults to safely stay in their cars and still see and hear storytime happening in person. The event is broadcast using an FM transmitter and participants can listen to the story and activities over the car radio.  This innovation has seen nationwide success for libraries that want to keep families safe while still offering in-person events.

On the day of the event, families drove to the Centennial Park Library’s south parking lot, tuned into the FM station, and waited for the fun to begin. Each event included a few stories, a little music, and a take-n-make craft to complete later at home.

Colleen Kulp is a Children’s Librarian at the Centennial Park Library and organizer of this program. “We are thrilled to be doing any kind of in-person storytime!

High Plains Library District’s Innovative Storytime Trucks

“T is for Truck” Drive in Storytime occurred in April 2020. Big trucks on display were part of the presentation.

On April 20, the theme was T is for Truck.  In addition to stories about trucks, big trucks from Sturgeon representing Xcel and Mountain Constructors were on hand. Participants could get a closer look at these vehicles after the main presentation.

The next drive-in storytime is scheduled for May 4; the theme and activities are still in the planning stages. On May 18, local author Jennifer Dizmang will be reading her book, Harry Hornacre Learns Fire Safety. This book features some Greeley characters who you may know.

Kulp is excited about the storytime activities planned for the summer. “We’re already talking about doing back-to-back drive-ins for the summer.”  This will allow more families to participate. The first drive-in for summer is June 1, alternating with an outdoor storytime every other Tuesday.
